Green is Life, Poland’s leading horticultural trade show taking place in Warsaw from September 1-3, 2016 has added a new award to its impressive line of medals and distinctions traditionally awarded by the jury of the show’s Plant Novelties Competition and presented during the opening ceremony. The Green is Life Press Award recognizes excellence in plant breeding with members of Europe’s horticultural media (including FloraCulture International) serving as judge.

The decision of awarding one of the 28 novelties submitted to the Plant Novelties Competition was made based on the results of e-mail voting of editors of national and foreign garden magazines, as well as hobby publications directed to a wide group of recipients – plant lovers, held from 8-22 August 2016.

Green is Life is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2016 Green is Life Press Award is Salix gracilistyla ‘Mt Aso’ by Szmit Nursery from Ciechanów, Poland. Bred in Japan by a cut flower grower, this pinkish-red male selection forms a spreading shrub 6ft x 6ft with handsome bluish-gray leaves that are silky underneath. The twigs are covered with a grayish-tan fuzz (indumentum) and in September the pink flower buds start to develop. ‘Mt Aso’ will even open for Valentine’s Day if cut and brought inside a few days before the floral holiday.! They beautifully combine with red roses with soft, silky flowers.
