BOSKOOP, The Netherlands: Plantarium is the ideal platform to showcase your latest innovations if you’re involved in the ornamental horticulture and gardening industry. This year’s show will unveil over 50 entries for the New Plant Awards and several new plants will be highlighted on the New Plant’s stand near the entrance. These pages are a run-down of Plantarium’s most distinctive highlights. It’s not exhaustive – there’s a lot more to discover at Plantarium – but it gives an idea of the show’s wide-ranging appeal. Here are some of our favourites.
Acer shirasawanum ‘Munn 001′ (Moonrise)
Acer shirasawanum ‘Munn 001′ (Moonrise) surprises everyone with its spectacular colours. The new leaves are bright red when they emerge in spring, forming a wonderful contrast with the fresh yellowy-green leaves. In the summer, Moonrise is entirely covered with almost luminous yellowy-green leaves. The tree is not susceptible to disease and does not suffer from leaf burn. Moonrise is winter-hardy down to -22 °C and must be pruned in the spring or summer. Prefers a sunny or semi-shaded spot in moist, well-drained soil. Moonrise is ideal for individual planting on the terrace or balcony, in group plantings, borders or mixed containers. This PBR-protected plant was bred by Carl Munn from Brooks, USA. Entered by Van Son & Koot BV from Kaatsheuvel, which is also bringing the variety to market. Managed by Plantipp BV from IJsselstein.
Andropogon gerardii ‘IPG agro’ (RED OCTOBER)
A North American native, Andropogon gerardii ‘Red October’ (Big bluestem) features deep green foliage that darkens to purple in late summer, then vivid scarlet in autumn for spectacular late-season color. The prairie grass has small burgundy red flowers, resembling turkey’s feet, blooming in August on stems that can easily reach a height of 100-150 cm. The stems are dark green with red tips, changing to deep red in the autumn. A real eye-catcher in the garden. Entered by CNB New Plants from Lisse, which is also bringing the variety to market. Bred by Brent Horvath from Hebron IL, USA. RED OCTOBER is PBR protected.
Astilbe ‘Chocolate Cherry’ (Mighty)
Astilbe ‘Chocolate Cherry’ (Mighty) is an outstanding addition to the Astilbe Mighty series. The plant has striking, large velvet-red flower spikes and red stems. The leaves are a chocolate-red colour, changing to dark green when the plant is in glorious full bloom. The chocolate-red colour returns automatically once the plant has finished flowering. The plant reaches a height of around 100-110 cm and flowers in June/July. This PBR-protected variety was bred by Hans van der Meer from Nieuwe Wetering. Entered by Compass Plants B.V. from Hillegom, which is also bringing the plant to market in conjunction with Hans van der Meer.
Clematis ‘Taiga’ produces an abundance of flowers over a long period. The attractive double blue-purple flowers appear from summer through autumn. ‘Taiga’ can reach a width of 1 metre and height of 2.5 metres and is ideal for planting against a wall. Winter-hardy down to -15° C. Prune to 10 cm above the ground in March and place in full sun, preferably in fertile, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Ideal for use as a combination plant, for individual planting on the balcony or terrace, in a hanging basket or for planting against a south-facing wall, but also in a container with support. The plant is PBR protected and was bred by Ochiai Shigeaki from Japan. Entered by Joh. Stolwijk & Zn. Boomkwekerijen BV from Boskoop, which is also bringing this Clematis to market in conjunction with FNK Young Plants from De Kwakel. Managed by Plantipp BV from IJsselstein.
Deutzia ‘NCDX2′ (YUKI CHERRY BLOSSOM)
Deutzia ‘NCDX2′ (YUKI CHERRY BLOSSOM) is a naturally low-growing Deutzia. In spring, YUKI CHERRY BLOSSOM produces a profusion of adorable, small pink flowers. This Deutzia is winter-hardy and its growth habit also makes it highly suitable for use as ground cover. In addition, the leaves change to a wonderful red colour in the autumn. Entered by Valkplant BV from Boskoop, which is also bringing YUKI CHERRY BLOSSOM to market. Boomkwekerij Leon van Lint and Van Son & Koot BV are growing this PBR-protected Deutzia.
Geranium ‘Neelkaya’ (KAYA)
Geranium ‘Neelkaya’ (KAYA) has striking leaves which remain an attractive bronze colour throughout the season. The plant is a strong, healthy and vigorous grower which is easy to care for and reaches a height of around 35-40 cm. The flowers are dark blue. Flowers from May to June. KAYA is suitable for pot growing and dry sales. Bred by Jan Neelen from Hem. Entered by Compass Plants B.V. from Hillegom, which is also bringing the plant to market.
Geranium cinereum ‘Noortpur’ (Jolly Jewel Purple), Geranium cinereum ‘Noortnight’ (Jolly Jewel Night), Geranium cinereum ‘Noortimpred’ (Jolly Jewel Red), Geranium cinereum ‘Noortsal’ (Jolly Jewel Salmon), Geranium cinereum ‘Noortjjhpi’ (Jolly Jewel Hot Pink) and Geranium cinereum ‘Noortjjsil’ (Jolly Jewel Silver)
Compass Plants B.V. from Hillegom is entering six cultivars from the Jolly Jewel series for the novelty awards. The striking colours make this series a genuine breakthrough in the Geranium cinereum range. The plants were selected for their colours, strong and healthy growth, disease resistance and profusion of flowers. The plants flower from April to September and reach a height of 10-12 cm. Jolly Jewel Purple has dark purple flowers with dark veining and Jolly Jewel Night has dark cerise-pink flowers with a dark purple heart. Jolly Jewel Red has dark scarlet flowers with slightly darker veining and as the name suggests, Jolly Jewel Salmon has salmon-orange flowers with slightly darker veining. Jolly Jewel Hot Pink has bright pink flowers with a narrow white centre and Jolly Jewel Silver has attractive pink flowers with a pale to dark purple heart. These PBR-protected plants were bred by Marco van Noort Breeding B.V. from Warmond. Compass Plants B.V. is bringing the plants to market.
Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst Orange’, Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst Red’, Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst White’ and Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst Yellow’
Star Roses and Plants Europe from Hillegom is entering four cultivars from the Mimulus Burst series for the novelty awards. These plants reach a height and width of 1 metre and have tapered flowers with two petals. The top petal is divided once and the bottom petal is divided twice, resulting in an unusual five-lobed flower. The plant flowers in the spring and summer, flowers best in sun or light shade and is drought tolerant. This shrub is also resistant to temperatures down to -20°C. Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst Orange’ has orange flowers, Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst Red’ has red flowers, Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst White’ has white flowers and Mimulus aurantiacus ‘Burst Yellow’ produces yellow flowers. Bred by Star Roses and Plants Europe from Hillegom, which is also bringing them to market.
Rehmannia ‘Walberton’s Magic Dragon’ (MAGIC DRAGON)
Rehmannia ‘Walberton’s Magic Dragon’ (MAGIC DRAGON) is a new herb-like perennial. Ideal for use in borders or as a terrace plant. The plant has a long flowering period which starts in May and lasts until the first frost. These sturdy, upright plants reach a height of approximately 70 cm. The flower stems keep branching out from the base in order to produce more buds and flowers. The bold pink flowers are large, reaching a diameter of up to 7.5 cm, and have attractive markings in the throat. MAGIC DRAGON is also an attractive plant for pollinators. Entered by Vitroflora from Dobrcz, Poland, which is also bringing the plant to market. MAGIC DRAGON is PBR protected and was bred by David Tristram from Walberton, Arundel, UK.
Rudbeckia ‘ET RDB 14-04′ (SUMMERINA ELECTRA SHOCK)
Rudbeckia ‘ET RDB 14-04′ (SUMMERINA ELECTRA SHOCK) is a compact grower with a short cultivation period. The plant blooms for a long time, from July until the end of October (until the first frost). The flowers are an unusual shape with long, narrow petals and are orange-brown in colour. Bred by Eternal Plant Boijl B.V. from Boijl. Entered for the novelty awards by CNB New Plants from Lisse, which is also bringing the variety to market.
