WESTLAND, The Netherlands: The Floating Flower Parade, a floral flotilla that every first weekend in August sails through the communities of Westland, Midden-Delfland, Schiedam, Vlaardingen, Maassluis, Rijswijk, The Hague and Delft, has reached a new record with 550,000 visitors in 2016.
The 19th edition of the Floating Flower Parade was opened on Friday August 5 and passed through the Dutch canals until Sunday August 7.
This year’s theme was ‘Stunning Beauty’ providing decorating inspiration for the over 60 boats which were lavishly decked out with flowers, plants, fruits and vegetables grown in the Netherland’s most famous horticultural region Westland.
A vital part of the Floating Flower Parade is its floral arrangement competition. It celebrates the work of Holland’s best floral designers with an emphasis on new design.
A panel of expert judges faced the daunting task of determining which boat were to be crowned the best in show. The jury was unanimous to recognise the Snowtime-themed boat from The Corsoboot Westland Foundation and made by flower arranger Danny Steenland with the title Best Boat in the Non-Commercial Boats Category, while seed giant Rijk Zwaan took home the first prize in the Commercial Boats Category with its Healthy Art-themed vessel.
On Sunday August 7, the final day of the Parade, the event organisers revealed the winner of the Visitor Vote Award. Alos here The Corsoboot Westland Foundation walked away with the highest honour, while The Night Watch-themed boat and Wesland’s Next Top Model were awarded second and third prize respectively. Flower arranger Johan Huisman, who wowed the crowds with a Sesame Street-themed boat was presented with the award for the best floral arrangement.
