trade_show_plantarium2013BOSKOOP, the Netherlands:  Plantarium (August 27-30), the leading international nursery stock trade fair, is increasingly embracing sustainability as part of its mission. New this year is the Sustainability Feature Area, including examples of a sustainable retail store layout.

Plantarium’s Sustainability showcase will bring together and promote one community, within and beyond Plantarium, focused on energy efficiency and sustainability growing media, sustainable gardening, sustainable plants and sustainable nursery stock production.

The Sustainability area is divided into two sections. The sustainable garden designed by Sjaak Willemstein Hoveniers from Waddinxveen. In 2013, this firm was voted the most sustainable horticultural company in the Netherlands. In his show garden, Willemstein will demonstrate that waste products from one source can be used as raw materials for other projects.

Near the sustainable garden, show goers will be presented with a demo of a sustainable garden centre. Here, sustainably grown plants will be presented in a special layout, which offers plenty of scope for story-telling. In the sustainable garden centre, QR codes and social media are used as marketing tools to give the end consumer more insight into the production process and carbon footprints of plants.

On Thursday 28 August, TV gardener, Lodewijk Hoekstra will visit Plantarium’s Sustainability showcase to share his vision on the sustainable garden centre.

Plantarium 2014 will run from 27 to 30 August 2014 in the Plantarium building at the International Trade Centre Boskoop-Hazerswoude.
