THEALE, UK, September 18, 2012: As part of the HTA’s Plan it, Plant it this Autumn campaign, National Conifer Week takes place between 29 September 2012 and 7 October 2012. The week aims to encourage consumers to see the benefits of conifers and gives garden retailers the opportunity to inspire their customers and boost conifer sales.
The objective of National Conifer Week, organised by the HTA British Conifer Group (BCG) and supported by the HTA is to encourage consumers to see the many benefits of growing conifers in the garden.
Point of sale materials including posters and bedcards are available to purchase from Hortipak and further resources including images and a conifer merchandising guide can be downloaded from www.the-hta.org.uk/ncw
Adam Wigglesworth from Aylett Nurseries comments, “We support National Conifer Week as it provides a great opportunity to shout about something plant wise at a quiet time of the year. Last year, as a result of increased volume, signing and promotion as well as ready to buy containers our sales were up by 12%. This year with National Conifer Week taking place within the wider Plan it, Plant it this Autumn campaign I think it helps provide added interest which will help to keep people in their gardens.”
Gary Carvosso from Coolings Garden Centre adds, “For National Conifer Week we find what works best is to promote one variety in large numbers on simple displays which indicate their versatility and or compatibility. To be effective the displays must be in ‘hot spot’ areas.”
Conifers have been overlooked in the past, but they’re currently making a comeback in the urban garden. According to an Ipsos Mori poll of 1,000 GB adults conducted in June 2011 for the HTA, nearly a third of garden owners have a conifer in their garden, making them an integral part of any garden design.
Conifers also come in a vast range of colours including blues, greens, golds, greys and bronzes. Many change shade during the year, and careful choice can give you a great splash of colour in autumn and winter when other plants become dormant.
From a small balcony with room for a container, to acres of grounds with space, conifers can add something truly special to any garden. Conifers are also a wonderful way to bring structure and drama to a garden all year round, whether as a backdrop, a standalone feature, or in a border with other plants. They can be planted as specimens, ground cover or in combination with heathers, grasses and herbaceous perennials for creating architectural backdrops through to soft borders.
They are extremely versatile, coming in an amazingly diverse range of shades, textures, shapes and sizes. A potted conifer can be used to brighten up a doorstep or balcony, whilst planted conifers can create height and add exciting form to any garden. Being hardy, easy to care for and long-lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for the marginal gardener looking for a low maintenance but high impact plant.
During National Conifer Week, many garden centres will be highlighting conifers under the Plan it, Plant it this Autumn strapline with eye catching displays, demonstrating the versatility, variety and longevity of British conifers.
