CAMPBELL, USA, September 20, 2012: Veteran seedsman, Darrell Messick, a long-time Ball salesman and executive and founder of brokerage firm Messick Company, passed away August 13 from natural causes in Saratoga, California. He was 81.
Darrell had a 60-year career in horticulture, starting with Ball as a sales represemtatove in 1955. A humorous piece in the company newsletter of the day said of Darrell, “It looks like he has the southerners eating out of his hand. He says they occasionally take a bite out of his leg, too.”
During his long career he helped develop the West Coast azalea industry and the Easter lily and bareroot rose businesses. He worked up to a vice presidency at Ball, and was a founder and board member of the DuPage Hort School. Later, he founded his own successful brokerage firm, Messick Company, which continues today.
