THEALE, UK, June 7, 2012: The New Plant Awards, sponsored by ProVaR will once again be at the heart of the HTA National Plant Show and will showcase the best in new plant introductions from UK plant suppliers and a selection of international breeders. The deadline for entries is this Friday (08 June).
New for 2012 is a houseplants category which joins the existing five categories: hardy nursery stock, herbaceous perennials, climbers, annuals and breeder innovation. The award winners will be announced and presented by the judging panel on the morning of Tuesday 26 June. Gold, Silver, Bronze and Best in Category awards will be allocated from which the Best in Show plant will be selected.
All entries, along with the winners, will be displayed in the new plant area for guests to see. Visitors will also get the opportunity to have their say in the Visitor Vote, sponsored by Floramedia, where an additional award will be presented for the Best New Plant on Wednesday 27 June at 3pm.
In 2011 the New Plant Awards attracted over 90 entries and the new plant area proved to be an inspirational area of the show. Dianthus ‘Memories’ from the Bransford Webbs Plant Company won Best in Show at last years event and the plant went on to be a huge success.
Geoff Caesar of the Bransford Webbs Plant Company commented “Winning the new plant award at the 2011 HTA National Plant Show has been fantastic for generating interest in Dianthus Memories. It is a great plant which with the help of winning the award will be a huge success in 2012. We started taking reserve orders at the show which with the press and interest generated by the award continued through the summer and autumn. We are confident that Memories, which is sold in aid of the Alzheimer’s Society with 25p being contributed for every plant sold will be one of our best sellers in 2012.”
HTA Director of Business Development Tim Briercliffe comments, “There is no other opportunity to see so many new plants under one roof – so the HTA National Plant Show is definitely the place to be to see new plants before they reach the marketplace.”
The New Plant Award judging panel includes Dan Heims of Terra Nova Nurseries, Neil Fishlock of Dobbies Garden Centres, Anisa Gress, news editor for RHS The Garden magazine and HTA horticultural adviser David Gilchrist.
