There is only a short cold period needed for the China series which is guaranteed to bloom.. Stems during the first flush of flowers reach up to 85 cm and the cultivars China Red and China Cerise produce 18 to 24 stems Van Zanten’s China series also include white and yellow cultivars.
The Misty series includes Misty Blue and Misty White which are produced as a perennial crop, available year round
According to Jos Spigt, product manager Royal Van Zanten the Rijsenhout-based company sells annually 400,000 to 500,000 young plants from tissue culture to growers in countries like Kenya, Ecuador and Colombia. “Statistical information from the Dutch flower auction reveals that this year 924,000 Limonium stems have been sold of which 700,000 stems are imported. From the total 924,000 stems, around 200,000 are produced in the Netherlands and this explains the necessity of focusing on export markets.”
Limonium, used primarily as a filler flowers, is an easy crop to grow, says Spigt who adds that with a balanced nutrition and watering of the plants no extra crop protection measures are necessary.
Spigt foresees an increase in production in South America and Africa but keeps strong faith in the Dutch Limonium production. “The average price of Dutch Limonium is € 0.20 eurocent whereas the price of imported Limonium is € 0.12 eurocents. So there is still a market for the premium quality Limonium from the Netherlands. The top dutch Limonium growers like Vd Zalm and Vd Klink are now discovering our China Red and China Cerise describing them as super varieties. Planted in week 10 a Dutch growers has its first flush of flowers in week 25 to 26, followed by a second flush in week 33 to 34. Yields of 15 stems per plants can easily be reached.”
